Subaru Crosstrek vs. HR-V
2026 Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V
Compare Subcompact Crossovers in Webster, MA
The Subaru Crosstrek is among the most well-rounded options in the subcompact crossover segment. It offers a comfortable cabin that's impressively roomy for its size, a flexible storage area, and a host of appealing features. Additionally, with standard attributes like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and tall ground clearance, it's better suited to outdoor adventure than many others in its class, particularly in Wilderness form.
While shoppers searching for a new subcompact SUV have no shortage of choices, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek's versatility is tough to beat. Here's a quick look at how it compares in a few key areas to a prominent competitor, the 2026 Honda HR-V.

Performance
The Subaru Crosstrek takes a big step forward in 2026 by eliminating the base engine and making the powerful 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER® engine standard across the lineup. That means, no matter which trim you choose for your Worcester or Charlton commutes, you'll get 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Is efficiency high on your priorities list? The 2026 model year also sees the introduction of an all-new Crosstrek Hybrid variant, generating 194 horsepower/199 pound-feet of torque and achieving an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving. All Subaru SUVs come standard with enhanced handling and control of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
By comparison, the 2026 Honda HR-V has a single 2.0-liter engine (145 horsepower, 138 pound-feet of torque) with no upgrade option or hybrid variant. It's competent for daily commuting, but it doesn't match the performance breadth of the Crosstrek. And while the HR-V offers all-wheel drive as an option, it's not standard in any trim and isn't as versatile as the Crosstrek's Symmetrical AWD system.
Capability
Capability is where Subaru's adventurous DNA really shines. In addition to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the Crosstrek comes standard with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and X-MODE® traction management to help navigate gravel, snow, or uneven terrain. For Natick and Shrewsbury outdoor enthusiasts seeking even more capability beyond the asphalt, the Crosstrek Wilderness adds a terrain-tuned suspension, 9.3 inches of clearance, Yokohama® GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, and a dual-function X-MODE® with Deep Snow/Mud settings. Its reinforced transmission cooler also boosts towing to 3,500 pounds - more than double the HR-V's maximum rating.
The Honda HR-V, meanwhile, sits at just seven inches of ground clearance and is primarily tuned for pavement. Its optional AWD system provides some peace of mind in wet weather but lacks the depth of control and engineering built into every Subaru SUV. Roof rails are standard on most Crosstrek trims for added cargo flexibility, including reinforced roof rails in the Wilderness trim that can support a rooftop tent. The HR-V requires extra accessories to achieve similar functionality.

Technology
Subaru has also been raising the bar for in-cabin tech. Above the base trim, the Crosstrek features an expansive 11.6-inch STARLINK® multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. For 2026, the Honda HR-V improves with a newly standard 9.0-inch touchscreen, but Subaru's larger display and streamlined interface deliver a more premium feel.
When it comes to safety, both vehicles provide advanced driver-assist suites. Subaru distinguishes itself with the EyeSight® Driver Assist suite, which includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering. The Crosstrek also adds steering-responsive LED headlights as standard, a feature unavailable in any HR-V trim.
