Have you tried Webster’s latest addiction, I mean addition, Cakettes? Recently relocating to 294 Thompson Road, Cakettes is a bit of a ‘specialty shop’ that everyone enjoys. We recently stopped by for an ice coffee, muffin, and a chat with owner/head baker Rachel (pictured below with her brother Sonny).
We love the description of Cakettes on the box “the perfect marriage between a cupcake and a truffle” How did you start making Cakettes? “I started working for the original owner, Tessa, right out of culinary school while the store was in Quinebaug.”What made you decide to buy the business? “I love making things from scratch. I love being my own boss. After this many years doing what I love, I think it would be very difficult for me to do something else.”
How many do you make per week? “I don’t know, a couple thousand I think. Do you want a real number?” At this point we went over to their registry system and with a little help from Hannah at the front counter we totaled the sales from last week and discovered 4,590 Cakettes were sold! Rachel was quick to point out it had been a holiday week, but still, it’s an amazing number.
Inside the shop on a typical day there about a dozen flavor choices along with the flavor of the month. There are also a rotating selection of muffins, a wide variety of coffee and tea selections, and her Dad’s favorite shortbread cookies. For Cakette fans we recommend the coffee mug, t-shirt, and cat koozie. Rachel also designs custom orders based on customer requests. Special events, Dr. Who, golf-themed, she can do it all.
